Current Economic Issues: Progressive Perspectives from Dollars & Sense, 11th ed.
Sep 5,2010
The economic news of the last several years has been remarkable--from the collapse of the "New Economy" and the bursting of the housing bubble, to the buildup of a war economy. The eleventh edition of Current Economic Issues is an invaluable tool for understanding the real world economics behind the headlines. Its 49 articles offer progressive perspectives on major economic news stories, separating the facts from both abstract textbook theory and rose-colored media reports.
The book starts by assessing current macroeconomic conditions in the United States. It then discusses the increasingly harsh conditions facing organized labor in the age of Wal-Mart. Three chapters scrutinize the impact of the Bush Administration's fiscal policies, the impact of tax cuts, the disappearing safety net, and proposals to privatize Social Security and Medicare. Final chapters take a hard look at the global spread of neoliberalism, and the economics of the "War on Terror," offshoring, trade deficits, AIDS, and global warming, and also discuss underreported efforts to advance economic alternatives.
A great resource to keep your intro courses fresh, topical, engaging, and accessible, or for anyone looking for a progressive voice to help them make sense of the latest economic news.
The sharply written, well-researched articles are drawn from the pages of Dollars & Sense, the bimonthly magazine of popular economics. Dollars & Sense also publishes Real World Macro, Real World Micro, Real World Globalization, The Wealth Inequality Reader, Introduction to Political Economy, Unlevel Playing Fields: Understanding Wage Inequality and Discrimination, The Environment in Crisis, Grassroots Journalism, Striking a Balance:Work, Family, Life, and Real World Banking.

Confronting Globalization: Economic Integration and Popular Resistance in Mexico
Sep 5,2010
Is the current model for economic globalization good for the poor or the environment? Are there alternatives? Amid rising worldwide protests that corporate elites wield too much influence over global economic governance, this book on Mexico' s experience under the North American Free Trade Agreement offers insights into both questions. With a focus on labor, agricultural, and environmental issues, Confronting Globalization tells globalization's untold stories: its social and environmental costs and the grassroots search for alternative paths. Indigenous coffee farmers fight for a place in the global market. Sweatshop workers demand safe working conditions and basic labor rights. Corn farmers organize to prevent the flood of imported grain from driving them off the land. The editors carefully set the context and clearly draw the rich lessons from these compelling stories, offering a rare grounding in how trade policies affect vulnerable communities and the environment, and what those communities are doing to defend themselves and promote their own homegrown alternatives.

The Two Faces of Money
Sep 5,2010
By tracing our modern money system all the way back to the man-made god of ancient Babylonia, this book unfolds many of the misconceptions we have about about money and the role government plays. With her Constitutional promise of a true, "democratic" money, America at her birth offered real hope to the world that mankind could at last break free of the heavy yoke of "false" money and its worship of mammon. Yet, with the exception of one brief twenty month period, America has never fulfilled that promise. Instead, and through a long series of behind-the-scenes manipulations and legal maneuvers, a "new legal regime" was established by the invisible government of the money powers, taking America from a Constitutional Republic to the brink of an unconstitutional dictatorship. America truly stands on the precipice of her demise. But there is an honorable way out when we look for, and clearly see, the true and constitutionally mandated face of money.Author: Geraldine Perry, Ken Fousek

Peddling Panaceas: Popular Economics in the New Deal Era
Sep 5,2010
As the Great Depression dragged on without a recovery, Americans were avid for anything that would help them to understand its causes and possible solutions. During this period, orthodox economists were largely discredited, both in the White House and among the public. Three of the most popular and influential figures of the period - Edward A. Rumely, Stuart Chase, and David Cushman Coyle - were not trained in economics. In "Peddling Panaceas", Gary Dean Best analyzes their remedies for the Depression, their proposals for permanent economic reform, and their influence on the New Deal. Each of these men represented one of the three principal economic factions within the New Deal. The inflationists within the New Deal found support from the Committee for the Nation, which was largely the creation of Edward Rumely, a physician-turned-educator-turned-businessman-turned newspaper publisher-turned-amateur economist. Rumely's committee was influential in the early New Deal. The planners within the New Deal were represented in popular magazines and books by Stuart Chase, who was an engineer and accountant before he began to expound on economics.Author: Gary Best
